A quiet week for passed legislation; five federal bills cleared committee and are headed toward a House floor vote, most of them touching small businesses and the VA.
Nothing crossed the finish line this week at the federal level, so the story is what's lined up next.
Coming up next week:
Free cybersecurity help for small businesses. A bill (HR 10238) would direct the Small Business Administration to give owners free resources on defending against cyber threats. It has cleared committee and is on the House floor calendar, though no firm vote date is set yet.
Warnings about foreign business threats. Another SBA bill (HR 10329) would require the agency to publish free guides, distributed through its local offices, teaching small business owners how to protect their data, intellectual property, and supply chains from foreign rivals. The SBA would update those guides every year and report new threats to Congress. This one is also on the House floor calendar with no date confirmed.
Bringing factory work back to the US. A bill (HR 9718) would have the SBA launch a free website within 60 days of passage, with a matching tool to help small manufacturers find US-based partners and guidance on moving production back from overseas. Like the others, it has cleared committee and awaits a floor vote.
More lending power for small businesses. A bill (HR 10352) would let the SBA temporarily lend up to 15 percent more per year to the development companies that make loans to small businesses, including those focused on underserved communities. It is on the House floor calendar, waiting on a vote date.
VA budget overhaul. A bill (HR 7683) would restructure how the Department of Veterans Affairs manages its money, creating a Chief Financial Officer role and a new Office of Planning and Budget to catch spending errors faster. It would also create a new office giving Congress direct access to VA budget data. If you or someone in your household uses VA health care or benefits, this is the machinery that controls how that money moves. The bill has cleared committee and is on the House floor calendar. No firm floor date has been confirmed for any of these five measures.
