Your Week in Edina Legislation

July 6–12, 2026

A quiet week for passed legislation locally, with five federal bills cleared from committee and headed toward a House floor vote.

No bills crossed the finish line this week at any level of government touching Edina. The action is all ahead of us, with a handful of federal measures cleared from committee and waiting on a full House vote.

Coming up next week:

ALS research funding extension. HR 8205 would keep federal money and fast-track drug approval programs for ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) running through 2031. Universities and research labs, including those at the University of Minnesota, rely on this funding for long-term studies. The bill cleared committee and is headed to the full House floor, with no firm date set yet for that vote.

Maternal health research at NIH. HR 6238 directs the National Institutes of Health to fund studies on reducing deaths and injuries during pregnancy and childbirth. Results would shape care standards at hospitals nationwide, including Fairview Southdale and other facilities Edina residents use. It is also awaiting a House floor vote after clearing committee.

Airport security upgrades. HR 8770 (the SAFEGUARDS Act) redirects the $5.60 security fee already on every airline ticket to fund $500 million per year for baggage screening systems and $250 million per year for checkpoint technology. If you fly out of MSP regularly, newer scanners and potentially shorter security lines are what this translates to on the ground. The bill cleared committee and is still awaiting a House floor vote.

Several other federal bills cleared committee this week, covering a reorganization of a Department of Homeland Security outreach office and a terrorism threat assessment report requirement for allied nations. Neither changes services or rules that touch Edina residents directly.

No firm House floor date has been announced for any of these bills.
