More police focus on drunk driving enforcement The city would hire one officer for one year starting October 2026 to investigate and respond to DWI cases full-time instead of splitting the work across multiple officers.
May reduce crashes and injuries from impaired driving A dedicated officer working only on drunk driving cases could increase patrols, catch more impaired drivers before accidents happen, and reduce traffic deaths and injuries citywide.
Funding covers only one year; position may end The grant pays for this officer only through September 2027, so the city would need to find new money after that year or the position would disappear.
Authorizing the submittal of a grant application to Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, in the amount of $165,000, for the period of October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027, for a dedicated DWI Officer within the Traffic Investigation Unit,in accordance with Resolution 2025R-112 related to federally-funded grants.
